Improving safety and health at work through digitalisation

Digitalisation is changing the world of work, bringing new occupational safety and health (OSH) challenges as well as a multitude of innovative solutions. A new report by the European Tech & Industry employers highlights how digitalisation can help make workplaces safer and healthier.

Produced by official campaign partner the Council of European Employers of the Metal, Engineering and Technology-based Industries (Ceemet), the report highlights a number of tangible benefits of digitalisation complementing human labour in the workplace.

New technologies such as wearables allow for the monitoring of employees’ health and provide feedback, which can result in adapted decisions. Sensors and smart personal protective equipment can alert when there is a problem compromising the safety and protection of employees.

Good ergonomics and exoskeletons can also be improved through digitalisation, keeping a greater diversity of workers, including those with MSDs and older workers, as long as possible at their workplace. Digitalisation can even help mitigate psychosocial risks through the use of interface software; and data derived from artificial intelligence can help OSH professionals make better decisions and offer better evidence-based OSH protection to workers.

The limits of what digitalisation can do to help create healthier and safer workplaces has yet to be reached. EU-OSHA’s next Healthy Workplaces campaign on digitalisation, starting in 2023,  will look into  the benefits in detail, while ensuring that the challenges digitalisation brings are also addressed.
