Enhancing protection for education workers with Long Covid-19

The Covid-19 pandemic had an undeniable and long-lasting effect on the teaching profession and education systems across Europe. The European Trade Union Committee for Education (ETUCE) is an Official Campaign Partner of the Healthy Workplaces Lighten the Load campaign, and brought over 50 education trade unions from across Europe together in an online seminar on 20 September 2022 to raise awareness on the serious issue of Long Covid-19.

The event also aimed to encourage education trade union actions to enhance the protection of education workers affected by the Long Covid-19 condition. Musculoskeletal complications are reported by those suffering with this condition, as well as an impact on their mental health, quality of life and employment as well as economic situation.

EU-OSHA tools to support the return-to-work process following Covid-19 and Long Covid were shared, and the importance of recognising Covid-19 as an occupational disease was discussed. In addition, the seminar provided an opportunity for participants to talk about their experiences, challenges, and strategies at a national level in addressing the Long Covid-19 syndrome in the education sector.
