Portugal – Working with chronic work-related musculoskeletal disorders

Since the average age of the workforce is increasing, the number of workers faced with chronic work-related musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs), such as arthritis, rheumatism and osteoporosis, is also going up. Good communication between employers and workers is essential to provide solutions and meet workers’ individual requirements.

To examine this issue in more detail, the Portuguese focal point is organising a webinar focusing on the importance of communication and participatory risk assessment in understanding workers’ needs and finding suitable solutions to chronic MSDs. Speakers highlight the critical role of early intervention in preventing MSDs from becoming chronic. They discuss how to manage a safe and healthy return to work after a period of MSD-related absence, and how to ensure that workers can fulfil their role while preventing the onset of a range of MSDs.

Taking place online, this webinar is useful for OSH technicians, managers, HR professionals, and individuals with an interest in tackling the problem of work-related chronic MSDs.

Speakers:

  • Emília Telo, EU-OSHA Focal Point Coordinator at the Working Conditions Authority (ACT)
  • Luísa Pedro, Professor at the Lisbon School of Health Technology, Polytechnic Institute of Lisbon
  • Marcelino Pena Costa, Employers Representative on the EU-OSHA Management Board and Vice-President of the Confederation of Commerce and Services of Portugal – CCP
