The year in review: campaign highlights from a busy and successful 2018

As 2018 draws to a close, we’re taking a look back at some of our highlights from a packed first year of activities within the Healthy Workplaces Manage Dangerous Substances Campaign. As a result of the hard work of all our partners, the campaign message has already been spread far and wide.


Campaign highlights

The campaign officially launched on 24 April at the European Commission headquarters in Brussels. Marianne Thyssen, Commissioner for Employment, Social Affairs, Skills and Labour Mobility confirmed that raising awareness of the risks and taking action to limit workers' exposure to cancer-causing chemicals is a key priority of the European Commission.

Since the beginning of the campaign, EU-OSHA has been offering practical tools and publications to help workplaces manage dangerous substances. A database of practical tools and guidance, case studies, info sheets and an interactive infographic are all available on the campaign website. These can all be used to help workers implement risk prevention practices. Look out for lots of new additions to the database in 2019!

In September, EU-OSHA contributed very actively to the Austrian Presidency’s conference, ‘Fight against Occupational Cancer’, to raise awareness of the campaign and the Roadmap on Carcinogens. EU-OSHA is participating with 5 other European organisations in the Roadmap, which aims to raise awareness of the risks that arise from exposure to carcinogens in the workplace. It also seeks to promote and facilitate the exchange of good practice across Europe.

In October, EU-OSHA’s network of partners, workers and employers all came together to take part in the European Week for Safety and Health at Work, which involved hundreds of events taking place across Europe.

A big thank you to our partners

EU-OSHA’s extensive network of partners in over 30 countries are essential to the success of the campaign. National focal points and their networks, official campaign partners (OCPs), media partners and the EEN Network represent over 1000 organisations involved in spreading the message of the campaign across Europe. They do this through the organisation of events and activities, as well as through print and online media.

National focal points have been very active in organising conferences, such as the congress on the prevention of occupational diseases which took place in June in the Netherlands. OCPs have been busy organising events relating to dangerous substances in particular sectors, such as the INCOBOZ international conference where participants discussed dangerous substances in the construction and automotive sectors. And in Austria Cosanta offered OSH professionals a free crash course on the management of dangerous substances at the workplace. Media partners have also been promoting the campaign’s message online and in print.

The campaign has so far generated over 2 million online interactions and the campaign website has registered nearly 140,000 visits! Be sure to watch our YouTube video showcasing this year’s highlights to get a flavour of the campaign – it might even inspire you to get involved in next year’s activities.

Looking ahead to 2019

Of course, the campaign doesn’t stop here! There’s lots to look out for in 2019. The Campaign Good Practice Exchange event takes place in Brussels on 5-6 March and in October we’ll once again celebrate the European Week for Safety and Health at Work. Wrapping-up the campaign in November we’ll have the Good Practice Awards ceremony, followed by the Campaign Summit in Bilbao.
