Despite legislation to protect workers, dangerous substances still pose a significant risk to health in many workplaces across the EU. Reports suggest that dangerous substances are present in 38 % of workplaces — this figure reaches almost two-thirds in certain sectors. Dangerous substances cause a large proportion of occupational diseases and some groups of workers are particularly sensitive to the risks. Workplace exposure to carcinogens is of particular concern — this results in 80,000 deaths and costs EUR 2.4 billion each year.
