Visualisation tool: ageing and OSH from across Europe at your fingertips

EU-OSHA’s new visualisation tool presents the key findings of the pilot project ‘Safer and healthier work at any age — occupational safety and health (OSH) in the context of an ageing workforce’. Users can explore data and information in an interactive way by comparing countries and searching for policies, strategies and programmes, among other possibilities.

The tool provides a comprehensive, user-friendly and cost-free way for individuals, companies and policy makers to access information on how European countries are dealing with the challenges of safety and health at work. The tool is also multilingual, using a machine translator to offer fairly accurate versions of the tool in many languages.

Data used in the project come from harmonised European-level sources including ESENER, Eurostat, Eurofound and others to ensure comparability.

The tool is split into 3 main sections which look at different aspects of the data. The key issues section allows users to compare data from and between EU/EEA countries and to the EU average on issues such as early exit from the labour market, labour market participation, impact of work on health, health inequalities and working conditions.

The second section on policy development looks at the policies, strategies and programmes implemented by countries across Europe. In Belgium, for example, a national strategy for well-being at work has been introduced which aims to: prevent occupational illnesses; deal with new risks for older workers; strengthen well-being at work; and improve the treatment of occupational illnesses and the reintegration of workers. 

In Denmark the government has initiated Collective Labour Agreements, most of which outline a framework for specific schemes for older workers, including individual ‘development dialogues’ and flexible arrangements for older workers. A special job design to be developed at company level can cover: work tasks, flexible hours, and reduced working time, to name just a few.

Four country groups were identified when examining European ageing policies based on similarities and common features in policy development. Users can examine the factors influencing policy development and compare policies of European countries within and across the clusters.

The third main section, country insights, includes country profiles, where users can find all relevant facts and figures for each country, along with examples of OSH and related policies, strategies and programmes. Users can also find out about future challenges, in respect of a country’s current situation. For those who want to go into more detail the tool can also look into specific topics and compare, for example, the impact of work on health on citizens between Spain and Finland. By selecting 2 countries users can see in-depth data on work-related health problems, exposure to risk factors, and much more.

In the same section of country insights, infographics will also be available soon. These will provide users with a handy overview of the challenges facing each European country when it comes to safety and ageing at work, and of the policies already in place to address these challenges.
