Sweden – Creating safe working environments for workers handling heavy loads

The manual handling of loads can lead to discomfort, pain or injury to the musculoskeletal system. In particular, back pain is a major work-related health complaint associated with manual handling and occurs across the European Union (EU).

As part of the EU-OSHA Campaign Healthy Workplaces Lighten the Load, the Swedish focal point is holding a 2-hour webinar focusing on how employers can provide safe and healthy working environments for workers involved in handling heavy objects.

The webinar begins with a presentation focusing on the connections between safe working environments and the use of ergonomics, technology and work organisation. This is followed by presentations on handling workplace incidents involving heavy loads and on using the work assessment tool ‘KIM I’, which can help workplaces apply evidence-based assessment methods to prevent work-related injuries. A final presentation looks at the importance of gender in the work environment, followed by a question-and-answer session with participants.

The online webinar is targeted primarily at regional safety representatives and employer representatives for small and medium-sized companies, but anyone interested in the work environment is welcome. No special prior knowledge is required.
